***NEW FAFSA REQUIREMENT FOR STATE FINANCIAL AID
(Including HOPE and Zell Miller Scholarships)
Beginning summer term 2013, a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) will be required in order to receive any state financial aid.* The 2012-13 or 2013-14 FAFSA may be used for summer term 2013. Please check with the financial aid office for any college-specific application policies and deadlines. Please note that effective June 8, 2013, GSFAPPS will no longer be available as an application for any state financial aid.
A 2013-14 FAFSA will be required for fall term 2013 and will be applicable through summer term 2014. A current year FAFSA is required for each year that you seek state financial aid. To complete the FAFSA, please click here http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/.
If you have questions about the new requirement or if you are unsure whether you are receiving any state financial aid, please contact the Georgia Student Finance Commission at (770)724-9000 or (800)505-GSFC (4732) or your school’s financial aid office. ***Summer Volunteer Program at Eastside Medical Center
Only 20 students will be accepted for this program, ages 16-18. Students must apply for the program. The application can be found at www.eastsidemedical.com. Go to the volunteer link. For questions call the volunteer office at 770-736-2463.
***ATTENTION SENIORS: When you ask your counselor for a letter of recommendation, it will be ready for pick up in one week. PLEASE allow for at least a week and make sure that you have provided the counselor with information regarding you and your activities so they will be able to write a great letter about you.
***The GaDOE has created a Military Families webpage that has links to essential information for families and schools about the Military Compact and services for military families. We are trying to get information regarding the Military Compact out to all school administrators, counselors and families, so that we can better serve the students of military families. Grayson’s Guidance and Counseling Program strives to support the academic knowledge and skills and emotional growth of each student. Guidance is defined as helping all students receive support from parents, teachers, counselors, and others to make appropriate educational and career choices. Counseling is helping some students at certain times receive support from credentialed professionals in order to help them overcome personal and social problems which may interfere with their learning. Counselors promote academic improvement and development, build student assets, interact with government agencies as mandated by law, and give assistance to students, parents, and teachers in adjusting to the stresses of school life. Students are assigned a counselor alphabetically by last name. A graduation coach and a career specialist are also available to assist students.

Mission Statement
The mission of the Grayson High School counselors is to provide a comprehensive guidance and counseling program for grades 9-12 that offers developmentally appropriate activities and ensures the academic, personal, social and career success of its students. The program’s focus is proactive and preventative in nature and will provide its students the skills to pursue excellence in academic knowledge, skills and behavior, resulting in measured improvement against local, national and world-class standards. This program is developed according to professional and best practices.
Philosophy
The Gwinnett County Public Schools Board of Education adheres to the philosophy that its students acquire the knowledge and skills to be successful as they continue their education at the postsecondary level and/or enter the workforce. Pursuant to this vision, the philosophy of the Grayson High School counseling program is that it will be an essential and integral component of the educational process. This assumption is built upon the belief that all students, as a result of a comprehensive guidance and counseling program, can meet educational, personal and social objectives that will enable student to become successful, responsible and contributing citizens.
